Newsweek reports on a proposed merger within the Pentagon that would give Counterintelligence Field Activity (CIFA)—best known to the general public for spying on domestic peace groups—access to the Defense Security Service's (DSS) database of "4.5 million security files on defense-contractor employees currently controlled by DSS…[and] stored in a disused mine in western Pennsylvania." A source tells Newsweek that CIFA had previously had requests for that information turned down by DSS on the grounds that they'd failed to provide "adequate explanation" for why they wanted them.
