We will also be celebrating the contributions of Senior Editor Kerry Howley, who will be leaving our staff in August to pursue an M.F.A. in nonfiction at the University of Iowa.

We will be meeting at The Big Hunt, 1345 Connecticut Avenue, NW, just south of Dupont Circle, from 6 p.m. until you say the fun stops.

I am going to have to show my face at one of these things sometime if for no other reason than having people go "you are him? I hate that guy!!"

sixstring | July 11, 2008, 4:39pm | #

Funny, but just today, at about the time Nick was posting the Amtrak article, I booked the Acela from NYP to WAS for Wednesday the 16th. OK, red line from Union Station to Dupont Circle. I'll be the one with the overnight bag in tow.

Can we expect more unintentionally entertaining Tribune-style fascist rants in the Boston, New York, and Seattle papers due to this too?

ed | July 11, 2008, 5:23pm | #

The big what? Oh. Hunt. When you say it out loud it's dirty. Sorry if this has been mentioned before. (Sigh) D.C. people lead such glamorous lives.

classwarrior | July 11, 2008, 5:44pm | #

Good luck with your studies Kerry, but wouldn't have been more ideologically appropriate to pursue them at a private university?

long-time subscriber | July 11, 2008, 6:10pm | #

I only score about a 90 on the Open Borders Purity Test. Kerry has the ability to write on the subject of immigration without insulting people like me.

I'm going to miss that.

Russ 2000 | July 11, 2008, 6:23pm | #

Good for Kerry pursuing fine arts rather than the shameful arts of politics and punditry.

Russ 2000 | July 11, 2008, 6:25pm | #

wouldn't have been more ideologically appropriate to pursue them at a private university?

They're probably raping her on the out-of-state tuition. And if she lives in state, well, it's IOWA, which is punishment enough.

Russ 2000 | July 11, 2008, 6:26pm | #

wouldn't have been more ideologically appropriate to pursue them at a private university?

If anything, she's taking a pay cut.

• The birth of Editor in Chief Matt Welch's first child, Izidora.

Congratulations, Matt & Co.! Pretty name.

We will also be celebrating the contributions of Senior Editor Kerry Howley, who will be leaving our staff in August to pursue an M.F.A. in nonfiction at the University of Iowa.

Best of luck, Kerry! You will be missed.

Crusader Rabbit | July 11, 2008, 6:41pm | #

Congratulations, Kerry. Why the switch from fiction to nonfiction?

Paul | July 11, 2008, 8:04pm | #

Can we expect more unintentionally entertaining Tribune-style fascist rants in the Boston, New York, and Seattle papers due to this too?

You'll just get more of the platitudes and hot air about 'community' and 'sustainability'.

thoreau | July 11, 2008, 8:35pm | #

Kerry, it is time to let you in on the rules of grad school:

1) There is no greater good than free food.
2) See rule 1.
3) Funding comes pretty close to free food, but see rule 1.
4) Your thesis advisor is the enemy to be evaded at all costs.
5) Back when you were their age, you were so much better than those undergrads.
6) Even if you do manage to get some sleep, never admit how much sleep you actually got. It's far better to brag that you didn't get any sleep. You'll get more respect that way.
7) Asking a grad student "What year are you?" is like asking a woman her age.
8) Asking a grad student "How's your thesis research going?" is worse than asking a woman her age.
9) In every department there is at least one student who is wandering the halls getting absolutely nothing done. This is (usually) a rotating position, and he (it's always a he) is actually a really cool person to get to know.
10) You may think that you have reached heights of unstoppable scholarly prowess when you have successfully defended your thesis, but there is still one adversary even more fearsome than the thesis committee: The librarian, who will rigorously enforce the most nitpicky thesis format guidelines imaginable. Do not celebrate until you have conquered that final foe.

thoreau | July 11, 2008, 8:42pm | #

One more rule:

There's usually a student who literally lives in the grad student lounge. Don't go in there after midnight, because he (it's always a he) is trying to get some sleep. As to why the couch stinks? He can't be bothered to shower at the campus gym.

Congratulations, Matt, however, if you truly love your wife, you'll carry the next one like in socially evolved male would.

JW | July 11, 2008, 9:35pm | #

Congrats to both Kerry and Matt! You'll be missed Kerry.

Matt, you do realize that life as you know it is now officially over, right?

Red Eye Viewer | July 12, 2008, 2:40am | #

Great. Now what am I supposed to do at 3 o'clock in the morning?

dgiohe | July 12, 2008, 7:19am | #

aww how cute. the libertarians banished to the patio

Bronwyn | July 12, 2008, 10:44am | #

Good luck, Kerry! After almost two years at UofI as a postdoc fellow, I barely got away with my sanity. But I suspect that was more the fault of my advisors... the writing program there is phenomenal. Just a shame it's plunked down deep within the armpit of the country :)

Matt, congratulations to you and the missus on the birth of Izidora. Aside from the lack of sleep, I know you are now experiencing the most painfully beautiful sensation of love that you have ever felt. Lose yourselves in the wonder of it all!

nim chimsky | July 13, 2008, 4:40pm | #

I read the rankings of the most nanny statist cities in the U.S. the other day. I wonder if Seattle should have actually been ranked not second most nanny statist but first. While Seattle might allow gay bath houses, there are all kinds of nanny state rules around stripping and investigations into the clubs that weren't really touched upon in the blurb, which made me wonder if Reason went a little light on Seattle in the sex category.

VikingMoose | July 14, 2008, 8:47am | #

Congratulations to Matt! and good luck Kerry!

best,
VM

Thoreau is really bringing the knowledge here. That is good stuff.

Congratulations to Matt and Kerry. It's good to see that people are able to step away from the computer and get on with their lives every now and then.

Douglas Fletcher | July 14, 2008, 12:56pm | #

Give my regards to DC. Don't miss it a bit.

Colin | July 14, 2008, 3:56pm | #

Best of luck, Kerry.

Whatever you do, don't mention "ethanol."

NP | July 14, 2008, 4:02pm | #

Congrats on your first kiddo, Matt. Hope you're prepared for the coming oodles of lifelong headaches and nightmares. (Sorry, had to get that out.)

And Kerry, it's frankly beyond me why some people pursue an advanced degree in anything with a capital "A," but still, best of luck to you.

Warty | July 14, 2008, 4:21pm | #

I remember when I was bored with my job and left to go back to grad school. Now I remember having one of those "income" things, and I can't imagine why I left.

Thoreau: She's seeking an MFA, not an MA or MS. Thus she should expect far less institutional abuse.

lunchstealer | July 14, 2008, 4:26pm | #

Congratulations and best of luck to the both of you!

Also, thoreau isn't joking about the damned librarian. In my case it was an assistant to the graduate dean, but the outcome was the same. Except she screwed up the paperwork, and so I graduated anyway. Then when I finally got all the revisions done and took it back, she was very thankful that I'd bothered, since technically they'd graduated me.

GG | July 14, 2008, 7:47pm | #

Will you also be celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Drug Enforcement Administration?

Congress sure is!

iowan | July 14, 2008, 8:15pm | #

. . . the writing program there is phenomenal. Just a shame it's plunked down deep within the armpit of the country :

Hey, that's heartland, not armpit.

Thoreau: She's seeking an MFA, not an MA or MS. Thus she should expect far less institutional abuse.

My brother got his MA and MFA and U of I. It's not rocket science, but those arts people are every bit as persnickety (that's a technical word).

Welcome to the state Kerry. Hopefully you'll be out of here before the 2012 election cycle begins.

Leah | July 14, 2008, 8:20pm | #

Congratulations Matt!

Kerry...DON'T LEAVE US!!! [collapses in desperate sobbing]

Well, back to Lobster Girl, I guess...

Goodbye Kerry

While it's a beautiful name, Izidóra is just plain Izidra here in the good 'ol USA.

Amy Alkon | July 16, 2008, 1:41am | #

Congrats...she's adorable...and we sat next to Brian Doherty and Angela at the Press Club Awards and screamed really loudly for reason.

Kerry, I'll miss reading your stuff...hope you'll freelance for reason!

Isaac Bartram | July 16, 2008, 8:33am | #

Congratulations Matt!
What no congratulations for Emmanuelle.

I seem to recall that it's the woman that actually does the work.

All the best to Mom and Dad and may Izidóra's life be long and happy.

Matt Welch | July 16, 2008, 12:51pm | #

Thanks for the nice words, everybody!

And yes, Kerry will continue to write for the magazine, bien sur and merci Dieu! When she's not shucking corn or whatever.

Naga Sadow | July 16, 2008, 1:16pm | #

*stops crying and looks up with watery, sad eyes*

Really? Kerry will continue to write for Reason?

twistedmerkin | July 16, 2008, 2:54pm | #

But will she keep appearing on Red Eye? I feel sorry for KMW. She'll be the sole target of the creepy, sexist remarks. Oh, and can I be the first? This magazine has sucked ever since Kerry Howley left!

Kool! | July 16, 2008, 3:05pm | #

Drink!

I was going to make a snarky comment about Kerry going to socialist, hippie, liberal, granola-eating, white-suburban-kids-in-dreads, U of I (being an Iowa State grad myself, Go Clones!).

But, with all the comments about how crappy it is in Iowa I feel I must defend my home state. No, it isn't the most exciting place on earth but, it is a nice place to grow up. (But, the U of I still sucks)

Kerry, if you're going to be in Iowa by Labor Day, check out the Old Threshers Reunion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Thresher%27s_Reunion I'm sure it seems hickish to some of you elitist Reason readers but, turkey drumsticks, funnel cakes and smog spewing tractors! What more could a new transplant to Iowa want?

Guy Montag | July 16, 2008, 9:35pm | #

ugh!

I did respond as attending, but I missed it.

Inflicted a tummy wound at Baja Fresh, so went home to recover.

Am sure it was a fun time,
