Attn, DC Reasonoids: Happy Hour Next Wed., July 16!

On Wednesday, July 16, starting at 6 p.m., please join the D.C.-based staff of reason at a happy hour to celebrate:           

• The birth of Editor in Chief Matt Welch's first child, Izidóra.

• reason's strong showing at the 50th Annual Southern California Journalism Awards. Nominated for a total of 11 awards, we snagged three first places (for best news organization website, best news/investigative article, and best magazine feature/commentary); five second places; and three honorable mentions.

• The release of our August/September issue.

We will also be celebrating the contributions of Senior Editor Kerry Howley, who will be leaving our staff in August to pursue an M.F.A. in nonfiction at the University of Iowa.

We will be meeting at The Big Hunt, 1345 Connecticut Avenue, NW, just south of Dupont Circle, from 6 p.m. until you say the fun stops.

Drink and food specials throughout the night, and the back patio will be open for smokers.

See you on the 16th!

Funny, but just today, at about the time Nick was posting the Amtrak article, I booked the Acela from NYP to WAS for Wednesday the 16th. OK, red line from Union Station to Dupont Circle. I'll be the one with the overnight bag in tow.

Kerry, it is time to let you in on the rules of grad school:

1) There is no greater good than free food.
2) See rule 1.
3) Funding comes pretty close to free food, but see rule 1.
4) Your thesis advisor is the enemy to be evaded at all costs.
5) Back when you were their age, you were so much better than those undergrads.
6) Even if you do manage to get some sleep, never admit how much sleep you actually got. It's far better to brag that you didn't get any sleep. You'll get more respect that way.
7) Asking a grad student "What year are you?" is like asking a woman her age.
8) Asking a grad student "How's your thesis research going?" is worse than asking a woman her age.
9) In every department there is at least one student who is wandering the halls getting absolutely nothing done. This is (usually) a rotating position, and he (it's always a he) is actually a really cool person to get to know.
10) You may think that you have reached heights of unstoppable scholarly prowess when you have successfully defended your thesis, but there is still one adversary even more fearsome than the thesis committee: The librarian, who will rigorously enforce the most nitpicky thesis format guidelines imaginable. Do not celebrate until you have conquered that final foe.

One more rule:

There's usually a student who literally lives in the grad student lounge. Don't go in there after midnight, because he (it's always a he) is trying to get some sleep. As to why the couch stinks? He can't be bothered to shower at the campus gym.

Good luck, Kerry! After almost two years at UofI as a postdoc fellow, I barely got away with my sanity. But I suspect that was more the fault of my advisors... the writing program there is phenomenal. Just a shame it's plunked down deep within the armpit of the country :)

Matt, congratulations to you and the missus on the birth of Izidora. Aside from the lack of sleep, I know you are now experiencing the most painfully beautiful sensation of love that you have ever felt. Lose yourselves in the wonder of it all!

I read the rankings of the most nanny statist cities in the U.S. the other day. I wonder if Seattle should have actually been ranked not second most nanny statist but first. While Seattle might allow gay bath houses, there are all kinds of nanny state rules around stripping and investigations into the clubs that weren't really touched upon in the blurb, which made me wonder if Reason went a little light on Seattle in the sex category.

Also, thoreau isn't joking about the damned librarian. In my case it was an assistant to the graduate dean, but the outcome was the same. Except she screwed up the paperwork, and so I graduated anyway. Then when I finally got all the revisions done and took it back, she was very thankful that I'd bothered, since technically they'd graduated me.

I was going to make a snarky comment about Kerry going to socialist, hippie, liberal, granola-eating, white-suburban-kids-in-dreads, U of I (being an Iowa State grad myself, Go Clones!).

But, with all the comments about how crappy it is in Iowa I feel I must defend my home state. No, it isn't the most exciting place on earth but, it is a nice place to grow up. (But, the U of I still sucks)

Kerry, if you're going to be in Iowa by Labor Day, check out the Old Threshers Reunion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Thresher%27s_Reunion I'm sure it seems hickish to some of you elitist Reason readers but, turkey drumsticks, funnel cakes and smog spewing tractors! What more could a new transplant to Iowa want?
