Now Playing at Reason.tv: The Reason Roundtable

Earlier today, D.C.-based reason staffers gathered to talk about their upcoming and ongoing projects, and to discuss the stories of the day.

reason.tv Editor Nick Gillespie moderated the 30-minute freewheeling chat, which included reason mag Editor in Chief Matt Welch, Senior Editors Radley Balko and Kerry Howley, and Associate Editors Michael C. Moynihan and David Weigel.

The conference was videotaped by reason.tv's Dan Hayes and Roger M. Richards.

Umm, dude. That table's not round.

And it looks like Nicky G. seized the power position as "moderator". Make of that what you will.

Sorry, stupid HTML tags....

I have the round table transcript right here:

30 minutes? I'd go to war if Reason asked, but that's going too far.

OT: Is Obama dog-whistling? And, if so, to whom? I'm sure DavidRockefeller would take his calls.

I'm waiting for the Special Edition DVD, with outtakes, deleted scenes, and the 60 minute documentary "The Making of The Reason Roundtable: Peril and Promise".

You guys have been hanging around Kurt Loder too much, "Real World" cinematography and all.

John Cosmotarian jackson | February 20, 2008, 7:17pm | #

Most of you guys have "the face for print."

Stevo Darkly | February 20, 2008, 7:18pm | #

Commenters, your harshness has become tiresome.

The sound level is too low -- and yeah, the table isn't actually round, smirk -- but it was kinda interesting to eavesdrop on that discussion.

That was an interesting space the Reason staffers were in, too -- bricks and books and a big wooden table (pine?) and matching shelves. Kinda cool.

John Cosmotarian jackson | February 20, 2008, 7:19pm | #

I like reading reason (the mag and HnR)but I want to watch this about as much as TMZ the Tv Show.

Ken Shultz | February 20, 2008, 7:29pm | #

"Real World cinematography"?!

Naw, it was more like the first act of Reservoir Dogs.

SxCx | February 20, 2008, 7:30pm | #

The market demands more inter-staff ribbings!

SxCx | February 20, 2008, 7:31pm | #

"Alright guys, let's get back to work!"

Then out came the bongs...

Bingo | February 20, 2008, 7:31pm | #

yeah the snarkiness is lame and unwarranted. I turned up the volume and its pretty interesting to see the process you guys go through. Also, as Stevo said, nice office!

dbcooper | February 20, 2008, 7:37pm | #

It was solid, not quite McLaughlin Group level, but a bit easier to listen to and pick out the voices.

I liked it. Nick, stop with the bad jokes.

dbcooper | February 20, 2008, 8:05pm | #

Franklin, it's all about the Buchanan-McLaughlin interplay.

SxCx | February 20, 2008, 8:13pm | #

Ah come on, Nick's funny. Nobody bats a thousand.

I'm just relieved to see a group of heady journalists joking around.

Dog's New Clothes | February 20, 2008, 8:51pm | #

Sam: "Nick, stop with the bad jokes."

Seriously? Was I the only one who thought the Rocky Dennis reference was funny?

Jake Boone | February 20, 2008, 8:57pm | #

Just finished watching... I liked it. I'd watch more of these.

Though now I have to find an issue to be obsessively wrong about, so I can get a shoutout too.

how about suicide bomb mission? Serious. Taco bell? After hours? you'll break some glass! Serious. You can leave a note too. It will like, make a difference. Really. Did I mention 72 (AMERICAN) virgins as sideline benefit? Plus, people will take you seriously for once.

For like, 30 seconds.

matt | February 20, 2008, 9:10pm | #

That's quality.

I hope they make this weekly. It's sort of predictable if you watch that after reading HnR all month, but otherwise, it's just a great ad for the magazine.

And Radley's doing this country a damn service with his justice system coverage.

I was as hard on reason for their "handling" of Ron Paul as anyone, but when they're good, they're good.

emerson | February 20, 2008, 9:22pm | #

Nice job on this, guys-plus-Kerry. Look forward to seeing it monthly or weekly.

joe | February 20, 2008, 9:43pm | #

Totally OT, but I thought you'd enjoy this.

Top front of boston.com (Boston Globe) website:

Romney put in $42.3 million of his money

The amount equates to about $167,000 for each of the 253 delegates Mitt Romney won before suspending his campaign. (Globe)

ha ha!

sv | February 20, 2008, 9:47pm | #

pretty interesting, Reason. looking forward to reading the stories you mentioned here. as others pointed out, a) sound levels were really too low, and b) nice office!

sv | February 20, 2008, 9:55pm | #

hey -- did anybody check out the youtube they have on reason TV of Prodigy from Mobb Deep shouting out Ron Paul? It was really brief, but he said he wouldn't vote for Obama or any other candidate purely on race, and seemed to feel that RP is the only candidate committed to 'preserving our freedoms'. nothing that surprising, but although i know that RP had gotten some interest within the hip hop community, i haven't heard much more about it in some time. I'd kind of like to hear some more on that.

matt | February 20, 2008, 10:12pm | #

I don't know much about Mobb Deep except that he's a collaborator with and presumably an employee of Mr. 50 Cent.

Now there's a guy who's endorsement would bring the voters around...

dr_dog | February 20, 2008, 11:09pm | #

Where's my snare. I have no snare in my headphones.

Mobb Deep...Mr. 50 Cent

My man Fiddy. Mobb's aiiight.

This reason insider shit is kickin' when you can fuckin' hear it.

You could take a page from those Russain news channels and do this naked. Would it increase viewership?

Maybe you people can have a scandal and end up with your own version of "Shattered Glass."

I, for one, would not watch (no offense to anybody!), and I imagine that the writers themselves would be even more uncomfortable with the cameras.
Did I really need to say that?

I'll bet Mr Gillespie took the lead as moderator because he is now in charge of Reason.tv, and this was recorded for Reason.tv
