USA Today notes that Clean Air Calabasas, not to be outdone by Belmont's imminent ban on smoking at home, is considering extending its ban, which already covers most outdoor locations, to apartments. Belmont's ordinance, which is expected to receive final approval next week, applies to any residential unit that shares a ceiling or floor with another residential unit. The proposed Calabasas ordinance, by contrast, covers only rental units and new condominiums; it does not apply to existing condominiums. So if you're rich enough to afford a condominium (or a house) in Calabasas, you will still be allowed to smoke at home. But if you're a mere renter, you're out of luck. Even if the landlord doesn't mind if you smoke, the city does.

Is it still legal to sell cigs in these gulags? Or have they unilaterally banned a legal substance?

You can buy cigs, as long as you smoke them in either:a) Your single family house ($1M+ for a shack)
or
b) San Mateo

You think cop cars might be de facto exempt?

Cops are ALWAYS exempt from the laws they uphold. Just ask them...Paul | October 3, 2007, 1:47pm | #
unilaterally banned a legal substanceEd, if a legal substance is unilaterally banned, we henceforth refer to the substance as "illegal".
And the drug war continues to expand...

All Calabasas has to do is ban smoking within 25,000 miles of a public building.Geography pedant | October 3, 2007, 2:55pm | #
12,500 miles should do it, too.Actually, I guess 8,000 miles works if you think in 3 dimensions...

I do believe the Almighty has had enough. He has already started to fulfill Donald Fagen's prophecy, "California...tumbles into the sea".The rest of the Golden State can join La Jolla on its slippery (land)slide toward a Police State.
