Don't Forget to Wear a Rubber!

wristbands.gif As we all know, the best way to express your concern for any pressing social issue is by way of a small rubber bracelet. Now, courtesy of the Adam Smith Institute, capitalists who appreciate the importance of trade for alleviating developing world poverty can join the fun. I'm not sure whether the offer extends to people outside the UK, but they say they'll send you one of these stylish numbers gratis if you e-mail them your address.

I'm in the U.S. and received mine in the mail today.

I don't know... while I agree with the sentiment I don't think that this isn't much better than Fundie Underoos (Fundi-roos?)

Ruthless | August 21, 2006, 7:55pm | #

I already have an "I (heart) Wal-Mart" tattoo on my forehead. That's an even stronger statement of the same principle, isn't it?

Oh Snap!

MUTT | August 21, 2006, 9:19pm | #

Wouldnt "I buy goods from hellholes that shoot union organizers" be cl;oser to reality?

WW | August 21, 2006, 10:10pm | #

Yeah, good point! Hey poor people of the world! Until the safefy and welfare of union organizers is assured, I sure won't do dick for you! And then, after a lucky few of you get a union, the rest of you can get priced out of the labor market. Help is on the way!

Larry | August 21, 2006, 10:16pm | #

Isn't giving these away for free anti-capitalist?

Ayn_Randian | August 21, 2006, 10:19pm | #

Shh, WW, MUTT already admitted that he hates the brown "hordes of cheap labor" and still won't tell me why I can't rent the apartments I own to people who live south of an arbitrary line but I can rent them to people who live 2 inches NORTH of said line.

Don't confuse MUTT with facts or logic, he's too crammed up LewRockwell's ass.

Whatever, my "Support Ribbon Makers" magenetic teal car ribbon will be the toast of the idealogical accessory world.

Ayn_Randian | August 21, 2006, 10:44pm | #

Oh yeah, MUTT, I'd like to see a link from a reputable source concerning your claim that some country we pay major products from summarily executes union organizers.

I won't hold my breath.

Tasty Curry | August 21, 2006, 11:12pm | #

Hey man, I love free trade, but last time I checked all that shit at Wal-Mart comes from the Godless, and Adam Smith-less, Commies in China.

I am all about the sentiment, as long as we exclude those slave-labor communist douche bags.

Stevo Darkly | August 21, 2006, 11:53pm | #

Highly tangential to the thread topic, but as a patriotic gesture, I was thinking of getting an American flag and "This anus doesn't run" tattooed across my butt-cheeks.

...but last time I checked all that shit at Wal-Mart comes from the Godless, and Adam Smith-less, Commies in China.

You are correct. All the steel shelving, the concrete in the floors, the asphalt in the parking lot, the wire running the lights, all the computers, even the labor to build the building. All commie sourced. I hear they even import the empty space between shelves from China. Fuckers.

this trend of 'wearing your heart on your wrist' i wrote about a while ago... i think its stupid, basically. People shouldnt have to advertise their beliefs - just act on them.

AynRandian,
MUTT's comment probably comes about ten to twenty years too late, but at least we still have Guatemala on the list of hellholes that shoot union leaders!

Tasty Curry | August 22, 2006, 9:54am | #

Hey k,

I used to work there. You have no idea.

But seriously, last time I checked, I wasn't buying the parking lot.

I'm just saying, buying from poor countries is great as long as those making the goods are not being held in slavery by their own government and are able to participate in their own free market for both goods and labor..

The whole point, I think, is that buying from poor countries enriches the citizens when they have a free market as well, not that it enslaves them to a Pseudo-Imperial, Anti-Capitalist dictatorship, like our friends in China have.

Just sayin'.

Swillfredo Pareto | August 22, 2006, 10:17am | #

buying from poor countries enriches the citizens when they have a free market as well, not that it enslaves them to a Pseudo-Imperial, Anti-Capitalist dictatorship, like our friends in China have.

The probability that the Chinese citizenry will ever free themselves from the Pro-Capitalist dictatorship, should they actually want to, is markedly greater with the increased standard of living that free trade brings them.

Tasty Curry | August 22, 2006, 11:37am | #

I am just saying that, whatever we call what we have with China, it is not "Free Trade" as only one of us actually has a "Free Market." Only one of us actually has a properly valued currency, as well.

Now, if all we want it cheap products, then this is fine.

But I want "Free Trade" and "Free Markets" and, last time I checked, what we are doing with China does not qualify as their populace is enslaved, not free.

When the average Chinese person participates in an open market for his labor, as opposed to a centrally planned one, then we can call getting goods from China part of a "Free Trade" policy.

Jesus, who would have thought getting a bunch of libertarians to see the evils of communism would be so hard.

I already have the LIVE WRONG bracelet in black. But I'm having trouble finding again my "I Support Pole Dancers" magnetic ribbon.

Ayn randian-

...and still won't tell me why I can't rent the apartments I own to people who live south of an arbitrary line but I can rent them to people who live 2 inches NORTH of said line.

Because lots of people with guns now say you can't...

Get over it, or die trying.

My beef is school taxes. Why am I(42, single, no kids, no potential) paying to babysit little Johnny Numbskull?

(Though I will admit to jumping some little 9 yr old shit at the bus-stop and getting $11.42-- another $2200 or so and I'll be 'even'.)

Nothing like having some sort of theory- a framework, if you will, to sketch out a purported reality. Its another thing when reality gets buried so not to damage the theory.
Try El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, China, Burma....even "democratic" India.
Union organizers arent the end all. They just are the logical response of wage workers to being driven like animals......do you really want to state wage workers in Guatemala, etc, are on equal footing with Capital? Really? And if they ARENT, they are somehow morally lacking/criminal/stupid/greedy to join up (as Captital certainly does) under thier own intererests?
Really? Do you confuse theories with realities THAT much???
